Coturnix Quail Color Guide
Work in Progress. If you have any pictures or information that would be helpful for this page let me know and I happily link to your site and give you credit. These are the American names I do believe. Other countries may call these colors something else. If anyone knows anything about the genetic codes of these animals please let me know. These will be better organized with time.
Brown
This is the dominant wild color in Coturnix Quail. The male is on the left (notice the lack of black spots on it's chest. The female is on the right. Below is a pictures showing the sides of these birds. The top two pictures are courtesy of E. Tucker. Thanks for all the great pictures.
Golden
These gene is dominant to the wild color but it's also a partly fatal gene. If you breed a golden to a golden it is said 25% of the eggs will die before they hatch. Photo courtesy of E. Tucker.
Silver
Similar to the dominant Brown color but with a lighter orange and a bluish gray replacing the dark brown on the wild colored bird.
